LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

Composition and Qualifications:

Although experience in government affairs work and/or political background is helpful, but not required, committee members should be registered to vote.

Scope:

To monitor and pursue legislative activities that relate to the AFA International political agenda.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Works on the state level to establish working relationships with senators and representatives to further the legislative interests of flight attendants.

  2. Works to educate the flight attendants on the importance of legislative action.

  3. Primary coordinator and educator for FLIGHTPac campaign.

  4. Establishes contact with International Office to pursue legislative affairs.

  5. Writes/provides an article for each issue of the newsletter.

  6. Maintains contact with the AFA International website and keeps abreast of AFA happenings on the political front.

  7. Educates Piedmont flight attendants on the comings and goings of other AFA carriers.

  8. Keeps LEC Officers informed on current issues and events needing promotion to flight attendants.

  9. Provides monthly report to LEC President on legislative issues.

  10. Acts on recommendations of the Director of Government Affairs and Legislative Policy Committee (Intl level).

    Communication:

    Committee members are responsible for coordinating with the LEC Chairperson of the Committee and the LEC Chairperson shall report to the LEC Officers.  The LEC Chairperson should maintain files and transfer them to her/his successor.  All committees shall report to the LEC on any discussions with the company.  All committees will act liaisons between the membership and the LEC.  No committee shall make a policy, which conflicts with LEC or AFA policy.  Recommendations for change shall be presented to the LEC in writing.  Any committee appointed by the LEC and empowered to conduct discussions or negotiations with the company on behalf of the flight attendants must first meet with the LEC prior to forming any agreement to gain the direction of the LEC.
